Description

Judge of the Washington State Supreme Court since 2020. Former Pierce County Superior Court Judge, a former Judge on the Washington State Board of Industrial Insurance Appeals, and a former Pro-Tem Judge in Pierce County District Court as well as the City of Tacoma Municipal Court. Previously worked as prosecutor, public defender, and private defense attorney. Serves on the Board of Directors of the International Association of LGBT Judges (IALGBTJ). Made history as the state’s first Black LGBTQ+ judge. Washington State Bar Association awarded Whitener her the Justice Charles Z. Smith Excellence in Diversity Award. Did a TedxPOS 2016 Talk titled “Claiming your identity by understanding your self-worth” where she discussed different labels of disenfranchisement that are used to limit a person's potential.
