Description
Actress on radio, stage and film. Appearing in over 300 films, she was the first black individual to win an Academy Award winner (1940) for her role in the film 'Gone With the Wind'. Notable blues and gospel singer and songwriter, and the first black woman to sing on radio in the United States. She is the first black Oscar winner to be honoured with a U.S. postage stamp. Bisexual, with a noted relationship with fellow actor Tallulah Bankhead.
