Description
Creator of abstract paintings, landscapes, and prints who is known for her large-scale paintings that blend Abstract Expressionism with Pop Art. Partner of artist Jessica Rankin. She has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions, and her work is in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. She has received many prestigious awards including the MacArthur Fellowship in 2005, the U.S. Department of State Medal of Arts Award in 2015, and membership to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. In October 2023, Mehretu broke the auction record for an African artist at Sotheby's Hong Kong, with her piece Untitled (2001), which sold for $9.32 million.
