Description

Dramatist writer and playwright of all aspects of Spanish life, particularly for his comedies and farces. Nobel Prize in Literature (1922). Notable books include 'Cartas de mujeres' (1892-93,, Women's Letters), 'El nido ajeno' (1894, Another's Nest), and 'Gente conocida' (1896, High Society). Notable plays include 'La Gobernadora' (1901, The Governor's Wife), 'Rosas de otoño' (1905, Autumnal Roses), 'Señora ama' ( 1908, The Lady of the House), and 'La Malquerida' (1913, The Wrongly Loved). Although he never revealed his homosexuality during his lifetime, the fact has been confirmed by his close associates. Also known as Jacinto Benavente y Martinez.
