Description

Leader of the Civil Rights Movement, first African American elected to Texas Senate, and later first black southern female elected to the US House of Representives. Discreet in her sexuality, but had a long term relationship with Nancy Earl. Noted for her stirring Keynote Address at the 1976 Democratic National Convention. Recipient of the 1994 Presidential Medal of Freedom.
