Novelist and literary critic. Notable works include 'Kid Gloves' (2015) and his collection of short stories 'Lantern Lecture' (1981, Somerset Maugham Award). Contributor to numerous magazines and newspapers, including The Guardian, The Observer, and BBC's 'Newsnight Review'. Elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature (2007).
