Description
Theatre Actor, producer, and director, noted for her physical beauty, splendid voice, and managerial abilities. Notable for 'Alice in Wonderland' (1932). Operated the Civic Repertory Theatre Company (1926-1936) in Great Britain, and Broadway's 1100-seat Civic Repertory Theatre. Relationship with theatre director Margaret Webster, with whom she co-founded The American Repertory Theatre. Was presented with a special Tony Award in recognition of her 50th year as an actress (1964) and in honour of her work with the National Repertory Theatre. Recipient of the National Medal of Arts (1986).
