Description

Aviator, was the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic from Newfoundland to Londonderry in 15 hours, amongst many other records. Received the U.S. Distinguished Flying Cross for this record. Wrote many books on her adventures. Member of the National Woman's Party, and an early supporter of the Equal Rights Amendment in the United States. Disappeared on a flight over the central Pacific Ocean near Howland Island, the circumstances of which has led to much speculation and theories. Although married formally to, it is generally confirmed that she had an intimate affair with Eleanor Roosevelt (see, for example, "Bibliography of Queer History: Modern Lesbian History."). Life story was made into a movie 'Amelia'.
