Description

Poet and travel writer. Though married, he had many male romantic friendships. Noted for his book 'Views Afoot' (1846), a collection of his European travels. Worked for the New York Tribune and Union Magazine. Travel books include 'Rhymes of Travel, Ballads and Poems' (1848), 'Eldorado, or Adventures in the Path of Empire' (1850), ' A Visit to India, China and Japan' (1853), and 'Northern Travel: Summer and Winter Pictures of Sweden, Denmark and Lapland' (1857). Novels include 'The Story of Kennett' (1866) and 'Joseph and His Friend: a Story of Pennsylvania' (1870). United States Minister to Prussia.
