Description

Author, essayist, critic, translator. Contributes op-eds to New York Times, Village Voice, New Yorker and others. Holds the Charles Ranlett Flint Chair in Humanities at Bard College, where he teaches one course each semester on literary subjects. Has received numerous awards, including the National Book Critics Circle Award Nona Balakian Citation for Excellence in Book Reviewing (2000), and Memoir/Autobiography, for 'The Lost: A Search for Six of Six Million' (2006). Member, American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
