Description

Painter, photographer, filmmaker, and activist. Controversy erupted when the Smithsonian Institute removed part of his displayed work due to complaints from the Catholic League and several politicians. Author of books about political and social issues of the 1980s relating to the AIDS epidemic, including 'Close to the Knives: A Memoir of Disintegration' (1991) and 'Memories That Smell Like Gasoline' (1992). Died of AIDS.
