Professor of art history, University of Rochester, and a critic on the post-modern development of art. Former editor of the art magazine 'October'. Former activist with the Aids organization 'Act Up', and has contributed to the academic discussion around Aids and art. Noted for his analysis of photography and its relation to the advancement of social issues in postmodernism. Author of the book 'Melancholia and Moralism – Essays on AIDS and Queer Politics' (2002).
