Description

Classical pianist. First American to win first prize in the International Frédéric Chopin Piano Competition (1970). He also won first prize at the Busoni Competition in Italy and the Montreal Piano Competition in Canada. Awarded the Avery Fisher Prize (1994) and received the University Musical Society Distinguished Artist Award in Ann Arbor, Michigan (1998). Winner of a Grammy Award in 2008. Faculty member, The San Francisco Conservatory of Music. Lives in San Francisco with his companion, Robert Guter, an historic preservationist.
