Novelist and playwright, notably for the books 'Go Tell it on the Mountain' (semi-autobiographical, 1953), 'Giovanni's Room' (1956), and 'Another Country' (1962). All are noted for inclusion of homosexuality. Critically praised writer, but he created controversy in the black community. Social, civil rights, and political activist.
