Description
Composer, conductor, pianist, and LGBTQ and civil rights activist. Considered the first American conductor to achieve international acclaim and recognition. His works include three symphonies, Chichester Psalms, Serenade after Plato's "Symposium", and his MASS. Composed the film and theatre scores for 'West Side Story', 'Candide', and 'On the Town'. Music director of the New York Philharmonic and conducted the world's major orchestras. Recipient of a Kennedy Center Honour award. Notable for his relationship with his mentor, New York Philharmonic conductor Dimitri Mitropoulos.
