Composer of classical music and opera. Pulitizer Prize winner for music twice: for his opera 'Vanessa' (1956–57) and for the 'Concerto for Piano and Orchestra' (1962). Notable operas include 'Antony and Cleopatra' (1966). Fellow, American Academy of Arts & Sciences. Partner was opera composer Gian Carlo Menotti.
