Description

Historian, known particularly as the author of the books 'A History of the Crusades' (3 volumes, 1951-1954). Other books include 'The Emperor Romanus Lecapenus', 'The First Bulgarian Empire', 'Byzantine Civilisation', 'The Medieval Man- ichee' (1947), 'The Fall of Constantinople: 1453' (1965), 'The Great Church In Captivity' (1968), 'The Last Byzantine Renaissance' (1970), 'The Orthodox Churches And The Secular State' (1972), and 'Byzantine Style And Civilization' (1975). Professor of Byzantine Art and History at Istanbul University, in Turkey (1942-1945). Subject of the television documentary Sir Steven Runciman: Bridge To The East (1987). Knighted in the 1958 New Year Honours List and appointed a Member of the Order of the Companions of Honour in 1984.
