Poet and playwright, whose central themes are love, politics and citizenship, religion and morals, and the relationship between unique human beings and the anonymous, impersonal world of nature. Winner of the Pulitzer Prize (1945) for 'Age of Anxiety'. Prolific writer of reviews and essays on politics and religion. Partner was fellow poet Chester Kallman.
