He is the founding editor of Kwani, the first literary magazine in East Africa. Noted for his book 'One Day I Will Write About This Place' (2011), made internationally famous by Oprah Winfrey. Came out as gay in a chapter of his memoirs, 'One Day I Will Write About This Place', in 2013 in response to growing homophobic legislation and attitudes in Africa. HIV positive.
