Description
Print maker and painter. Acutely atmospheric paintings are often distillations of personal memories. Represented Britain at the Venice Biennale in 1984. In 1985, he won the Turner Prize. A supremely gifted abstract artist, with a pronounced lyrical gift, as well as an accomplished teacher and art critic. His global haul of exhibitions, awards and honorary degrees is often considered to be unrivalled.
