Description
Gospel singer, whose work is considered a precursor to Rock & Roll music. Known as the Godmother of Rock & Roll. Notable songs include 'Down by the Riverside' (1944) and 'Rock Me' (1942). Had a notable, though secret, relationship with fellow singer Marie Knight, with whom she also toured, performed and recorded hits such as 'Up Above My Head' and 'Gospel Train'. Inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame (2007) and Rock & Roll Hall of Fame (2017).
