Description
Political activist who is most recognized as the organizer of the country's women's suffragette movement. Named by Time magazine in 1999 as one of the most important individuals of the twentieth century. Founded the Women's Social and Political Union (WSPU, 1903), an all-women suffrage advocacy organisation, which later became the Woman's Party. She went to prison fifteen times during the course of her activism. Had a relationship with classical music composer Ethel Smyth after the passing of her husband Richard.
