Description
Known as 'mother of the blues', was one of the first jazz and blues artists to make a recording. Inducted into the Blues Foundation's Hall of Fame and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1990. Scandal caused by a raided lesbian party she organized. In 1994, the U.S. Post Office issued a Rainey 29-cent commemorative postage stamp. Born Gertrude Pridgett.
