Description

Writer of fiction, art critic, and literature critic with a focus on the renaissance period. Books include 'Studies in the History of the Renaissance' (1873), and 'Marius the Epicurean' (1885) is his most substantial work. The primary influence on Pater’s mind was his classical studies, coloured by a highly individual view of Christian devotion and pursued largely as a source of extremely refined artistic sensations. Considered to have had great influence on the writer Oscar Wilde. Oxford professor.
