Description
Prime mover of the Arts and Crafts movement through his design work. Producer of jewellery, enamels, metalwork, house design, furniture, and fireplaces. Though married, he admitted to his wife his homosexuality before the marriage. Ashbee was a member of the Order of Chaeronea, a secret society founded in 1897 for the cultivation of a homosexual ethos. Set up the Guild and School of Handicraft, the Essex House Press, and founded the Survey of London. Wrote two novels, 'From Whitechapel to Camelo't (1892) and 'The Building of Thelema' (1910).
