Literary critic, poet and author. Columnist for the New York Daily News and a syndicated columnist. Notable for his jazz criticism and as a critic of cultural and artistic trends. Author of the books 'Don't The Moon Look Lonesome?' (2000) and 'Notes of a Hanging Judge: Essays and Reviews, 1979-1989', among others. Writer for The Voice (1980-1988). President of the Louis Armstrong Educational Foundation and since 2009 a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
