Description

Classical composer and pianist. Notable work includes 'Peter Grime's (opera) (1945, his piano concertos (1938-1945), and his orchestral works 'Nocturn' (1958), 'War Requiem' (1961) and 'Phaedra' (1975). Personal relationship with singer Sir Peter Pears. First composer to receive a life peerage. Grammy hall of fame for 'War Requiem' (1998). Created the Aldeburgh Festival (1948). Companion of Honour (1953), Order of Merit (1965), life peerage (1976).
