Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), Canada

The Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) is a Canadian trade union serving the public sector. CUPE is the largest union in Canada, representing close to 615,000 workers in health care, education, municipalities, libraries, universities, social services, public utilities, transportation, emergency services and airlines. Over 60% of its members are women, and almost a third are part-time workers. CUPE is affiliated with the Canadian Labour Congress.

CUPE, through its membership, has been a loud and vocal supporter of LGBT rights in Canada. It is particularly noted for its support of same sex marriage in Canada, and the rights of transgender workers to be respected in the workplace. It has established a sub-committee of its organization, called Pride in Our Work, to monitor and speak out about the rights of the LGBT worker, and to confront homophobia and transphobia everywhere.
