Description
Theatre and stage actor, notable for playing the role of Shakespearean men in productions. The Charlotte Cushman Foundation was created in her memory. Subject of the book 'When Romeo Was a Woman: Charlotte Cushman and Her Circle of Female Spectators' (2000). Lifelong partner was sculptor Emma Stebbins, after several other relationships including with British writer Matilda Hays. Full name is Charlotte Saunders Cushman.
