Singer, songwriter, activist who appeared in second season of television reality series 'American Idol'. Authored a New York Times best-selling book 'Learning to Sing: Hearing the Music in Your Life', with Allison Glock. Created the National Inclusion Project. Appeared in the Broadway theatre production of 'Spamalot'. Has won several awards for his music. Unsuccessfully ran as a Democrat for Congress for the State of North Carolina (2014).
