Creator of the Interior Design profession and prominent socialite, she used her extensive social network as a source for client commissions on decorating. Her suggestions on interior design soon received wide public recognition. The public became attracted to her use of light and colour to enhance the interior decoration of the home, a material change from the staid Victorian of earlier generations. Author of several books on the subject of interior design. Though married, she lived with theatre producer Elisabeth Marbury. In her early years she was a film actor.
