Description

King of Sweden (1771-1792). Power rivalry between powerless monarchy and ruling aristocrats led him to organize a popular coup d'etat. Notable for his cultural support and development, he founded The Swedish Academy and built the Royal Swedish Opera. He legalized the Catholic and Jewish presence in Sweden, and enacted wide-ranging reforms aimed at economic liberalism and social reform, though he restricted independent media. Surrounded himself with his favoured men. Assassinated. Also known as Gustaf III.
