Description
Bisexual patron of ballet who, along with friend George Balanchine, founded a number of ballet companies including The New York City Ballet. Prolific writer of poetry and books on dance, politics, history, literature, drama, music, film, photography, architecture, sculpture, painting and drawing. Taught directing and theater administration at the Yale Drama School. He published his memoir, 'Quarry', in 1986. In his further memoir "Mosaic," (1994), he frankly reports having homosexual as well as heterosexual affairs, and said that in the early 1930's one of his lovers was Carl Carlsen, a merchant seaman who had been the lover of the poet Hart Crane.
