Intimate friend of John Maynard Keynes at Cambridge. Notable success with the novels 'Eminent Victorians' (1918), 'Queen Victoria' (1921), Elizabeth and Essex (1928) and Portraits in Miniature (1931). Contributor to The Spectator magazine. Writer of critical biographies which are considered to have raised the art of biography by creating a new form of sense and background.
