Participated in every gay pride march that occurred during her lifespan, including the first, historic march and demonstration for gay rights in Washington, D.C. (1979). Grand marshal of the New York City Gay Pride March (1985). Awarded a lifetime achievement award by the National Coalition of Black Lesbians and Gays (1985). Member of the Harlem Renaissance.
