Artist, sculptor, and pewterer, who initially managed his family business, then embarked on his own career with several notable exhibitions in the 1920s. Moved to the United States to become a science fiction writer. Made headlines in 1907 with his arrest, conviction and imprisonment for homosexual affairs, a matter detailed bitterly in his autobiography when his homosexual friends failed to support him. The scandal caused a discussion on homosexual affairs, as it was believed his sentence was harsh.
