Description
Launched the first federal lawsuit in the country over the recognition of a same-sex partner (1975). Married the Australian Tony Sullivan, and applied for his permanent citizenship as a resident spouse, but the application was denied by the INS because the marriage between two same-sex partners was not lawful. Adams and Sullivan lost on appeal. The decision was reversed in 2016, and Sullivan was granted his green card. Their experience was documented in the film 'Limited Partnership' (2014).
