Founder of Alyson Publications in 1979, the largest independent publisher of gay and lesbian books (sold in 1995 to Liberation Publications). Founder of the Boston gay and lesbian newspaper Bay Windows (1983), and the travel company Alyson Adventures (1995, sold in 2002). Creator of Big Brother Mouse, an organization that provides children's books to underprivileged areas of Laos. Recipient of the first Lambda Literary Award for Publishing
