Description

Portraiture, war artist, creator of the Dobell Foundation. Won the Archibald Prize, Australia's premier award for portrait artists on three occasions. The Dobell Prize is named in his honour. Notable portraits include 'Joshua Smith' (1943) and 'Margaret Olley' (1948), and his series of Time Magazine cover portraits from 1960-1963. Awarded an Order of the British Empire in 1965 and knighted in 1966.
