Description
Portrait photographer and LGBTQ activist. The focus of her work is documenting and celebrating the lives of South Africa’s Black lesbian, gay, trans, queer and intersex communities. Founder, the Forum for the Empowerment of Women (FEW), a black lesbian organization dedicated to providing a safe space for women to meet and organize. Founder Inkanyiso, an organisation concerned with visual activism. Honorary Professor - video and photography at the University of the Arts/Hochschule für Künste Bremen in Germany. Notable exhibitions include 'Only Half the Picture' and 'Faces and Phases', and Tate Modern had its first survey of her visual activist work in 2020/2021. Recipient of numerous awards including appointment as a Chevalier de Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (2016) and an Honourary Fellowship of the Royal Photographic Society (2018). Author of three books.
