The LGBTQ community in Finland has a long history associated with it. The social stigma often associated with homosexuality in other countries has been less evident in Finnish society.
LGBTQ individuals have long been represented openly in Finnish politics, ever since the lesbian Hilda Maria Kakikoski became one of the first women, and the first LGBTQ individual, to be elected to parliament in 1906. Today, there are three LGBTQ individuals present and active in the national parliament.
Coincidentally, these politicians are very involved in the environmental movement of their country as members of the Green Party. This group is led by Pekka Haavisto, who is the government minister for the environment - he was voted the fifth most influential Finnish individual alive today.
