President of the Alcohol and Other Drugs Council of Australia since 2002, and Visiting Professor in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Sydney. Former Labor Party member of the House of Representatives representing the Division of Bonython, South Australia (1977-1994). Former Minister of Health, Minister of Community Services and Health, Minister of Trade and Overseas Development, and Minister for Social Security. Australian High Commissioner to the UK (1994-1998), President of the Australian Institute of International Affairs (1998-2002). Author of his memoirs 'A Cabinet Diary: A Personal Record of the First Keating Government 1991–93' (1999). Companion of the Order of Australia (1995). AIDS activist.
