Former Labor Party member of the House of Representatives representing the Division of Bonython, South Australia (1977-1994). Former Minister of Health, Minister of Community Services and Health, Minister of Trade and Overseas Development, and Minister for Social Security. Australian High Commissioner to the UK (1994-1998), President of the Australian Institute of International Affairs (1998-2002). Author of his memoirs 'A Cabinet Diary: A Personal Record of the First Keating Government 1991–93' (1999). Companion of the Order of Australia (1995). AIDS activist.
