Description

Professor of history and of women's and gender studies at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Founding member, Gay Academic Union. Co-Chair, National Gay and Lesbian Task Force (1989-91) and Founding Director of its Policy Institute (1995-1997). Published works analyse the changes that took place in the US that lead to the gay political movement. Notable books include 'Sexual Politics, Sexual Communities: The Making of a Homosexual Minority in the United States, 1940-1970' (1983, Stonewall Book Award) and his biography of Bayard Rustin 'Lost prophet: Bayard Rustin and the quest for peace and justice in America' (2003). Member, Chicago Gay & Lesbian Hall of Fame (2005).
