Description
Fired from his job as an astronomer for the U.S. Defense Department because of his declared homosexuality, he appealed to the Supreme Court but lost. First civil rights court action based on sexual orientation. Became an activist for gay rights and equality. Member of a number of gay rights groups. Co-founder (with John Richard Nichols, and using the name of the original group founded by Harry Hay) of the Mattachine Society. First coined the popular phrase 'Gay is Good'.
