Description

Fired from his job for homosexuality, he appealed to Supreme Court but lost. First civil rights court action based on sexual orientation. Became an activist for gay rights and equality. Member of a number of gay rights groups. Co-founder (with John Richard Nichols, and using the name of the original group founded by Harry Hay) of the Mattachine Society.
