Description
Historian, writer, and politician. Worked for the International News Service from 1924 to 1927 and was appointed editor of L'Europe Nouvelle in 1930. Joined the French Popular Party in 1936. Served as a Prisoner of War in World War II, but also cooperated with the Vichy regime serving as Minister Without Portfolio, was convicted in 1946 and released in 1954. Prominent author of Arab history and historical biographies, including Alexander the Great, the Emperor Julian, Cleopatra, Frederick the Great (for which work he won the renowned French Prix Broquette-Gonin), Napoleon (in Egypt), Lawrence of Arabia, and Hubert Lyautey.
