Historian and travel writer. Notable for the Pax Britannica trilogy (1968–78), a history of the British Empire. Transgender, and formerly James Morris. Famous for being the reporter embedded with mountaineers Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay as they became the first to summit Mount Everest. Popular books include 'Conundrum' (1974) which detailed her transition, her cultural history 'Venice' (1960), and her first book 'Coast to Coast' (1956). Awarded the Commander of the British Empire (1999). Awarded the Golden PEN Award by English PEN for "a Lifetime's Distinguished Service to Literature". Welsh nationalist.
