Description

Mathematician with an expertise in differential equations, notable for discovering the Kovalevsky Top and the Cauchy-Kovalevski theorem. Though she was prohibited from studying at a Russian university because of her gender (forced to study in Germany), she eventually became the first woman appointed to a full professorship in Northern Europe (Stockholm University, 1889) and was also one of the first women to work for a scientific journal as an editor (Acta Mathematica, 1888). Partner was playwright Anne Charlotte Edgren-Leffler. Also known as Sofya Vasilyevna Kovalevskaya.
